Chords and Harmonies

Lately, as I’ve advanced in my musical knowledge, I’ve been trying more and more to match the chords with the SATB harmonies in the hymnal, without making too many chord changes or using awkward chords (Dm#7b5, anyone? I think I actually saw that one the other day.)

But I wanted to ask the users of the site, how important is it that the chords here match the hymnal harmonies?

  1. The work that you are doing is very helpful. Please keep up the good work.

  2. I just found this site. I have been ‘collecting’ chords for songs in the United Methodist Hymnal for several years. I currently have about 95 UM Hymns with chords. I noticed your poll. I would suggest using a lower voice with simple chords (key of A or C) and supplying the capo position to match the hymnal. If you want to add more colorful/optional chords put them in parentheses or brackets. This would provide the most versatility. Keep up the good work.

    • I’ve been trying to use relatively simple chords, all in the keys of G, A, C or D (and their relative minors). I’m glad you find the site helpful, and it’d be great if you’d post some chords on the submit page.
