Resources

On this page, I will post various resources – not necessarily related directly to the hymnal.

Hymnal-related resources

GBOD Music Download page

This page, from the United Methodist General Board of Disclipleship, offers many songs for download, including some from the hymnal. The resource many have used to accompany ChordsUMC, “Traditional Hymns for Blended and Contemporary Worship,” may be found under T. Unfortunately, there is no hymn number search.

Andrew’s Hymn Index

A very useful site that lets you find or cross-reference hymns based on key or meter. It’s a handy digital version of the metrical index at the back of the hymnal, with the added benefit of search by key. It doesn’t have every hymn, but it has most of them.

Transposition Cheat Sheets

Here are some cheat sheets to make transposition of chords (or notes, for that matter) faster. These charts are good if you (a) don’t know how to transpose or are (b) like me and are lazy.

To use the charts:
Find the original chord in either the first column or the middle column (the first column with a dash), then count left (if you want to transpose down) or right (if you want to transpose up) the number of half-steps (one fret) that you want to transpose. If you transpose down, you can use the capo number at the top of the column to make the chords sound in the original key. (Admittedly, capo 11 is a little over the top)

  1. There is a great web site with the public domain words and midi from many of the UMC Hymnal and Faith We Sing songs.

    http://www.hymnsite.com/

Also there is a spiral bound guitar UMC Hymnal companion that has most but not all of the UMC hymnal music that is available from Cokesbury “How Sweet the Sound ” I will warn you that the verses do not all match the verses in the hymnal as you would expect…but it is all in one book and is in large print for those of us getting a little older…
